Throughout his investigation into the use of signal and noise as plastic materials, Marcelo Reis seeks out noise events in nature, exploring their plastic possibilities. This act of searching for something without a referent or definition functions as the antithesis of apophenia, which finds patterns where none exist, thereby creating skewed images of reality that limit our access to information. The noise events encountered are interpreted, recorded, and transcoded to create artistic objects whose referent is the absence of definition. Marcelo's most recent practice seeks out these events in waterfalls, which generate noise as they crash against rocks, move branches, or fall upon themselves. The work in Montemor-o-Novo will depart from intensive contact with the River Almansor, seeking not only sonic noise, but also moments of fog that act as noise placed between the observer and the observed.
