Beyond the physical, chemical, and mystical processes that occur in the brain, it is not entirely clear to anyone what is actually happening inside it. Some say the brain commands the body; others shout, "No, no! It’s the body that’s in charge of everything!" There are even those who think the brain is just a soft mass that, when well-cooked, makes for excellent delicacies. Thought, language, imagination, sensation, perception, balance, posture, breathing, heart rate rhythm, blood pressure, learning, memory… Phew, how does so much fit inside when the head is so small?

It is known that our brain weighs approximately 1.4 kg, which is about three times the weight of a chimpanzee’s brain and five times that of a lion's, and that it resembles a light grey cauliflower. The brain is plastic, meaning it is constantly changing, and this change is called plasticity. When we learn something new, new connections are formed in the brain, and these connections between neurons become stronger the more often signals pass through them. But Dentro da Cabeça (Inside the Head) there are also the nose and the mouth with a tongue inside… Oh, and the eyes too… Phew, the ears as well! So many things!

How are we going to fit all of this into a performance? It seems like an impossible task. Let’s get to work!

MÁRCIA LANÇA was born in Beja and lives in Lisbon. In 2008, she founded VAGAR, where she serves as artistic director. She has worked as a choreographer and performer in various collaborative settings. Her practice explores territories where the boundaries between the fictional and the real are subtle and blurred. Her interest in the poetic materiality of actions and concrete tasks lies at the core of her creative processes. She is passionate about emerging collective compositions, thinking as action, and situated constructions.

She created É Só um Dia, Outro lado é um dia, Dentro do Coração, NOME, Por esse Mundo Fora, Evidências Suficientes para a Não Coerência do Mundo, Happiness and Misery, 9 Possible Portraits, O Desejo Ignorante, Trompe le Monde, Morning Sun, and Dos joelhos para baixo.

She develops artistic research and creation workshops and teaches occasional classes on imagined anatomy, collective bodies, and collaborative processes for children.
