Under the direction of conductor José Eduardo Gomes, Orquestra Gulbenkian presents at Cineteatro Curvo Semedo a programme that brings together two timeless works from the orchestral repertoire. Tchaikovsky’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra is considered one of the unquestionable pillars of the virtuosic repertoire for the instrument. Deeply original and technically demanding, it was written by the Russian composer with the young violinist Iosif Kotek in mind, but would eventually be premiered by Adolf Brodsky, the first musician to publicly overcome the challenges posed by the score. In the second half of the concert, audiences will hear one of the most immediately recognisable works from the very first bars. Beethoven’s dynamic, restless and mysterious Fifth Symphony, which the critic, composer, and novelist E. T. A. Hoffmann described as “one of the most important works of its time.”

In 1962, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian decided to establish a permanent orchestral ensemble. Initially composed of just twelve musicians, it was originally named Orquestra de Câmara Gulbenkian. Over more than 60 years of activity, Orquestra Gulbenkian (the name adopted in 1971) has gradually expanded and today consists of around sixty instrumentalists, with the possibility of further enlargement according to the requirements of each programme. This structure allows Orquestra Gulbenkian to perform a wide-ranging repertoire, from the Baroque period to contemporary music. Works belonging to the standard repertoire of large symphonic ensembles may also be performed by Orquestra Gulbenkian in versions that are closer to the orchestral forces for which they were originally conceived, particularly with regard to the balance of their sonic architecture.
