Twenty artists delegation represents Portugal at Tanzmesse, in Düsseldorf

July 17th, 2024

The first participation from Portugal in this year's edition of Internationale Tanzmesse nrw, the biggest event dedicated to contemporary dance, that happens in Düsseldorf, Germany, from August 28th to 31st, is made possible by DGARTES, with the joint efforts of Teatro Municipal do Porto and O Espaço do Tempo. The Portuguese delegation will bring together 20 artists that are currently working from Portugal.

Ana Isabel Castro, Bartosz Ostrowski, Bernardo Chatillon, Bibi Dória, BRABA platform / Ary Zara & Gaya de Medeiros, Bruno Brandolino, Catarina Miranda, Daniel Matos, Diana Niepce, Gio Lourenço, Gonçalo Alegria, João dos Santos Martins, Joãozinho da Costa, Jonas & Lander, Luísa Saraiva, Natacha Campos, Odete, Tita Maravilha, Vânia Doutel Vaz and Wura Moraes are the names that will participate in this year's edition of International Tanzmesse nrw, which will have exhibition spaces, presentations of pieces, talks, debates and workshops.

Tanzmesse promotes international cooperation and the exchange between artists and professionals, with the involvement of more than 50 countries and a total of 1500 visitors. The exhibition space, Agora, is the central point of this initiative, where theatre companies, artists, institutions and artistic structures will present themselves through stands, in order to promote their works and expand their network, which will be the case of the Portuguese delegation, which will have a stand as well.

Anda, Diana, by Diana Niepce, and La Burla, by Bruno Brandolino & Bibi Dória, are part of the main program of pieces to be presented. Both showings will happen on August 30th, at tanzhaus nrw and Fabrik Heeder, respectively. This program has 19 pieces total, selected by the Tanzmesse curatorial committee, through an open call, which will be presented on stage, outdoors or online.

In this program, there's also open studios, where artists present the excerpt of a work ⎯ either in the beginning of creation or already in circulation ⎯ with a following moment with questions from the audience. On August 31st, Vânia Doutel Vaz will join this section with the project The Elephant in the Room, also selected by the curatorial committee of the event.

This first Portuguese presence at International Tanzmesse nrw is the result of an international cooperation between DGARTES and Internationale Tanzmesse nrw. Due to its recognition, size and diversity, constitutes a unique opportunity for the dissemination of national productions and the circulation of Portuguese artists and works in the field of dance, also enhancing the development of parnterships and the collaboration dynamics between the various delegations and participating artists.
