The classical — canonical — experience of the spectator in relation to a work of art consists in raising a gaze that places it at a distance, however close it may be. This formulation is, with slight differences, similar to the one Walter Benjamin gave to the concept of aura, that is, something unique and immanent to the work.

But if we think of an experience of total proximity to the work of art (which is not what usually happens in museums or art galleries), in other words, as an experience of contact, assemblage, and re-signification, then we must conceive, simultaneously, the idea of a provisional space of presentation.

A Participação das Pedras is a collective exercise on the “exhibition value” of artistic objects, of sculpture, and of matter that travels through time — stone.

Do some objects have more aura than others? Does a sculpture change when it is moved from one place to another? Is it possible to describe what another person is seeing? And the stones? What do they ultimately have to tell us?

Pedro Fazenda (Coimbra, 1957) is a visual artist trained at AR.CO, working in sculpture, stone design, photography, and scenography. He has been exhibiting since 1979 and has created public sculptures, collaborated in architecture, urban planning, and restoration, as well as provided training in stone sculpture. Since 1985, he has been responsible for the Stone Sculpture Department at the Centro Cultural de Évora. At that time, the Évora City Council allocated part of the former slaughterhouse facilities to the Stone Sculpture Department, thus transforming an industrial production space into a cultural production space. Since 2017, the Stone Sculpture Department has been part of the Associação Cultural Pó de Vir a Ser. Within the association, he has been developing both personal and community work on the materiality of contemporary creation, the use/reuse of various materials resulting from industrial activity, and urban intervention, participating in the creation of the city.

Rodrigo Pedreira develops an intermodal artistic practice, crossing sound, video, and audiovisual technologies in relation to space and time. He holds a degree in Theatre (ESTC) and a master’s in Art and Sound Technologies (ESMAE), working in areas such as live cinema, sound art, and audiovisual performance. He is the founder of the association Ocupação, has collaborated with various artists and theatre and music institutions, and has carried out multimedia and sound sculpture projects presented in Portugal. In 2024, he designed the audiovisual component of A Participação das Pedras, a project by Pedro Fazenda, presented at Culturgest.
